Staying in involved

How hard is it to stay in touch with your friends?  How hard is it to make it to the gym or to get our exercise? You know, “like you used to”?

Well, according to my clients, friends, colleagues, and people I meet day to day, it is very difficult.  Which I believe is why we always hear or say things like this “My friends and I just don’t have anything in common anymore”, or “We just are in a different place in our lives”, or “I just don’t have the same goals at the gym”, or “I don’t have the time I used to”. Unfortunately, I think these are excuses we use or say to rationalize putting true effort into things. I know for a fact that I can do better myself when it comes to staying involved .

Whether it takes too much time, is procrastination, laziness, lack of interest, priorities change, or is a combination of all of these, we as individuals tend to put things and people off.  I will always remember a quote a college finance teacher told me, which was,

“You can still drive on a highway with potholes, that is, until those potholes grow and grow without any attention, eventually making it impossible to drive on”.  Well, those important to us and our health should take precedence and not go on ignored with the belief that they will fix themselves or that there is always tomorrow.  Believe me, if you don’t keep in touch with those friends they eventually become acquaintances or worse off, just memories, and you might find yourself lonely more often than not.  And, if you forget the address to your gym or notebook full of WOD’s or routines, you will pay for it physically.  There is a reason you are “unable” to walk after you’ve missed leg workouts for a long time.  Ouch!

Whatever the reason, I think it boils down to the fact that we just don’t take the time or energy it requires to stay involved.  Remember, we always make time for what is a priority to us.  If we don’t have the time or energy to give our friends or to our workouts, you better hope your friends prioritize you more than you do them………..and………that I am not your personal trainer!!!  Because………….you WON’T walk if you forget me.  Now stay involved and ATTACK!!!!
