What is a real abdominal crunch?

Ask yourself what the “to crunch” means.  I don’t mean with your core but the use of the word.  Can you do it without using a synonym?  It simply means to bring two sides together, preferably at the same time.  So then why, when people perform abdominal crunches do they only bring one side to another?  Isn’t that a roll?

Try this…..when doing crunches, begin with activating your lower hips by slightly raising them or by tilting your hip off the floor.  Secondly, lift both shoulders off the ground.  Once you’ve engaged your lower half and upper half, you are ready to BEGIN the abdominal crunch.  One should feel extreme tension in the abdominal region before a single crunch is performed.  That is of course if you’ve followed the first two steps.  Once your abs are in a “ready position”, begin any routine or variation of crunches.  Just remember to keep both sides engaged as if you are bringing two sides together.  Now get off the floor with both sides and attack!
